New monograph of PSB members

The renowned publishing house Taylor & Francis (Boca Raton, Florida, USA) under CRC Press Imprint has published a monograph entitled: "Prototype of a Biomimetic Multi-Spiked Connecting Scaffold for a New Generation of Resurfacing Endoprostheses", whose authors: Ryszard Uklejewski, Piotr Rogala, and Mariusz Winiecki are members of the Polish Society for Biomaterials.

The monograph presents the overall course of the research tasks and the fundamental scientific results obtained within the frames of two Research Projects of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (No. 4T07C05629) and the National Science Centre Poland (No. NN518412638) and their continuation, accomplished at the Poznan University of Technology in cooperation with research teams from the Poznan University of Medical Sciences (from the Wiktor Dega Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Clinical Hospital) and from the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz (from the Department of Fundamentals of Medical Bioengineering at the Institute of Technology; currently the Department of Structural Materials and Biomaterials at the Faculty of Materials Engineering). The author of the concept of a new generation of superficial endoprostheses for the hip joint and other joints is Prof. Piotr Rogala, orthopedic surgeon from the Poznan University of Medical Sciences, and the implementation of bioengineering research work on the prototype of the above-mentioned endoprostheses with a multi-spiked connecting scaffold were headed by Prof. Ryszard Uklejewski; Dr. Mariusz Winiecki contributes in the research work of the above-mentioned research team from its beginning and belongs to the team's top management.

Presented are the results of the comprehensive bioengineering research programme on the MSC-Scaffold, which include the bioengineering design, prototyping, manufacturing, structural and osteoconductive functionalization, surface modification, experimental and numerical investigations of mechanical behaviour of the scaffold-bone system, cell culture studies, and pilot surgical experiments in animal models.

Developed in Poland, the prototype of multi-spiked connecting scaffold for entirely cementless fixation of components of resurfacing endoprostheses in the periarticular bone, is a internationally patented novel concept of the first in the world biomimetic fixation of such endoprostheses.

In the foreword to the monograph, Prof. Elżbieta Pamuła, President of the Polish Society for Biomaterials, Fellow FBSE, wrote:
“The MSC-Scaffold, through its structural and biomechanical biomimetism, preservation of bone tissue, and blood supply, may be regarded as a breakthrough approach to fixation of such endoprostheses.”

The publication was dedicated to Friends and Colleagues from the Polish Society for Biomaterials.

The monograph is available in a printed version (hardback) and as Open Access (available on the Taylor & Francis website by clicking the link: Download).
